Hikes from castle to castle

These pleasant hikes take you around the beautiful Lake of Thun with magnificent castles to visit during your journey.

Hike: Thun – Hünegg Castle – Oberhofen Castle

This lovely short hike starts off with a stroll through the attractive old town of Thun up to the castle. There, you can visit the mighty keep built by the Dukes of Zähringen around 1200 and experience the splendour of the High Medieval Knights' Hall. A beautiful walk takes you from Thun along the lake to the Hünibach boat landing stage. Here the trail departs from the lake and heads up towards Hünegg Castle. There, in addition to the fairytale reading library, it is well worth visiting the castle and its café. The hiking trail continues through the park to Hilterfingen and Oberhofen Castle, where one of the most magnificent gardens in the alpine region invites you to linger and enjoy. A visit to the castle, followed by drinks or snacks on restaurant terrace, concludes the hike. A bus or ferry will take you back to Thun.

Hike: Thun – Schadau Castle – Spiez Castle

From the turrets of Thun Castle you can enjoy a magnificent view over the town and Lake of Thun before starting your tour. Back at the railway station, you pass the boat landing stage and head out to the Schaudaupark. There is plenty of culture to see here: Schadau Castle, the Scherzligen Church and the Thun Panorama: a circular painting some 38 metres in circumference by the artist Marquard Wocher, and the world’s oldest surviving circular painting. The path then leads past the lido, along the Lake of Thun, through the popular Bonstettenpark with its beautiful paths and walkways. Proceeding through the Gwattlischenmoos nature reserve, you reach the community of Einigen with its well-known church. You now cross the road and railway line before strolling along the edge of the forest towards Spiez, with beautiful views of Lake Thun, the Niesen and Stockhorn. Here, you should visit Spiez Castle in its beautiful bay, while partaking of refreshments in the castle café or perhaps relaxing at the Spiez lido.
